Abstract: | This paper serves as a preliminary report on some of the findings in a time sequence study of the 30,000 Asian refugees who were forced by order of President Idi Amin to leave their homes in Uganda and flee to Great Britain in 1972. What strategies should a society implement when receiving a forced migrant population. An interdisciplinary team has been observing and documenting the British reception and resettlement of the Asians. Examination of the dispersal patterns of Ugandan Asians in the first section of the paper indicates that resettlement was not the primary goal of the Uganda Resettlement Board. The second section illustrates the strategy of shifting the burden of responsibility from the national government to the local authorities, with a look at housing policies and its consequences in one Greater London Borough. In the third section, interview data from a Greater London Borough provide evidence of the inadequacy of 'resettlement' policies of the British government over the past years. Ref., tables. |
