Abstract:Slightly revised version of Chap. III of Negaso Gidada's senior research essay: 'The Impact of Christianity on Qélém Awraja, Western Wälläga, 1886-1941' (History Dept., H.S.I. University, 1971). Qélém Awraja is located on the Sudanese border, due west of Addis Abäba. This paper is exclusively concerned with its dominant ethnic group, the Mécca branch of the Oromo (Galla). After the death of the awraja ruler Joté Tulu in 1918, semi-autonomous Qélém was absorbed into the more normal pattern of rule from Addis Abäba through governors foreign to the area. The authors describe the religious, political, economic and social aspects of the expansion of Orthodox Christianity in Qélém. AD 1886 is the most commonly suggested year for the introduction of Orthodoxy in Qélém. There are, however, strong suggestions of an earlier data. Orthodox Christianity spread in Qélém, not as a mass popular movement, but under noble and princely patronage. The Oromo people played a slight role. Notes.
