Abstract:This paper examines food strategies of urban households in Abidjan and Bouaké (Côte d'Ivoire) three years after the 1994 CFA franc devaluation. The study does not show a radical change in food consumption habits after the devaluation, but rather modest adjustment of diet level and composition to purchasing power given higher food prices. The following key tendencies were observed: 1) urban households increased the share of income going to food at the same time that they sought through diverse means to increase incomes; 2) households reduced their diet diversity and concentrated their food expenditures on necessities; 3) consumers maintained imported rice as the primary source of calories, with only a weak substitution toward Ivorian rice and cassava; 4) a 'diversification' of the diet via a generalized reduction in the consumption of animal proteins (meat and fish), of vegetables, and of fats and oils. At the same time there was an increase in consumption of eggs in the informal restaurant sector; 5) a recourse to the informal restaurant sector as a means of regulating the tension between the need to meet basic food needs, the reduction of family resources, and collective pressures on the family food budget.
