Abstract:The Food-Based Action Programme for Household Food Security and Nutrition Improvement for Kano State was initiated in 1996 and developed over the following year in order to respond to the high levels of malnutrition in the northern savannah zone of Nigeria. Participatory rural appraisals were held to gain information on communities' perceptions of household food security and common nutrition and health-related problems. To this end multidisciplinary terms visited twelve villages in three local government areas, Tudun Wada, Warawa, and Tsanyawa, corresponding to three agroecological zones. Information on farming, resources, nutrition, and health was provided by a total of 1718 households. This article outlines the programme development process, notably the participatory rural appraisal and its results, the preparation of the action programme document, the problems addressed by the action programme, and the government's approval. Ref., sum. in English, French and Spanish.
