| Abstract: | France has maintained an economic and cultural stronghold in its former colonies, backed by a significant military presence. Far from being decolonized, the former French colonies have experienced an increase in French economic entrenchment in the postindependence era. In important ways the mechanisms of French neocolonialism are different from those of the British. |
