Abstract: | Italian racial policy prior to the invasion of Ethiopia was essentially autocratic and discriminatory but differed from British colonialism in accepting inter-racial concubinage whereby Italians took 'madames', or 'madamas', i.e. local wives, often on a very temporary basis. After the conflict with Ethiopia, Italian policy, however, became increasingly doctrinaire, and led to the formulation of rigid racial segregation in almost all walks of life. In an detailed account the author describes the legal and social aspects of this racial policy. Ref. |
