Abstract: | In August-September 1615, a Dutch expedition bound for Magellan Straits and the Pacific, consisting of the ships Eendracht and Hoorn and led by the merchant Jacob le Maire, with as pilot Willem Cornelisz Schouten, visited Yawry Bay and the Sierra Leone estuary. Two accounts of the voyage were published in Dutch in 1618 and 1622. A section of the 1618 account, including some of the material on the visit to Sierra Leone, appeared, in a shortened version, in English translation, in Purchas' 1625 collection of voyages. Of the section on Sierra Leone in the 1622 account a translation is given here. In the notes the author refers to what is present or absent in the Purchas version of the 1618 account and includes a translation of omitted material. Notes to introduction, text, notes to the text. |
