Abstract:Leo Africanus is the earliest detailed written source for the history of the central Sudan, including the Songhay conquest of Hausaland. Various authorities have attached special significance to this early 16th century episode. Aim of the article is to prove that there was no conquest at all. This is done a.o. by looking at the region's other sources available which do not make any reference to the conquest. Notes.
