Abstract:Discussion of genealogical material documented in the past about the ruling families of Phalaborwa in the north-east Transvaal, and attempt to reconstruct Phalaborwa royal chronology. Seven published versions of the dynastic genealogy are available, of which five are variants of a single source. A comparison of these seven 'fixed' genealogies and material obtained from oral traditions in the field suggests that all share certain common features. Both lengthening and telescoping as well as other changes have frequently taken place in Phalaborwa royal genealogy over time, revealing dynastic factioning and interrupted filial succession which have clearly been long time characteristics of Phalaborwa history.
