Abstract:Studies the economic foundations of one African state: Masina in the inferior delta of the Niger south of Timbuctu; a short lived jihad state of the 19th century. Attention is paid to the special ueeds of public expenditure; the system of taxation; the sections of the economy and finally to the process of state formation. The state ultimately went dawn in milltary defeat because of its inability to import fire-arms, map, notes, summary.
