Abstract:The Luba Empire emerged as a major central African dynastic state by the beginning of the eighteenth century. Its heartland was located in what is now north-central Shaba Region (ex-Katanga Province) of the Republic of Zaire in the vicinity of the town of Kabongo. In the introduction the author reviews the collection of documents on the Luba Empire in the archives of Zaire. Apart from brief selections, little has appeared in print that is based upon investigations made in the heartland of the Luba Empire. There is, though, an important body of unpublished colonial-reports stored in the archives of Shaba Region and based upon field investigations made in the heartland. Presented here are three documents of particular interest, prepared between 1914 and 1918: 1. Gerard-Franyois de Clerck's 'Historique des Balubas' completed in August 1914; 2. Paul Orban's 'Historique de la chefferie Kabongo (Declarations du chef Kabongo et de ses nyampara)' dated 14 may 1916; 3. Van der Velde's 'Coutumes Barbares' dated 20 July 1918. These reports are presented here, each with an introductory note and annotation. Bibliogr., maps, notes.
