Abstract:The kinglists of the Imbangala kingdom of Kasanje, which flourished in northwestern Angola between ca. 1620 and 1912, afford a rare opportunity to assess how historians in oral cultures compile and maintain such memories of the past. The oral lists of Kasanje kings have been recorded in no fewer than a dozen versions spanning a period (1602 to 1970) longer than the entire history of the kingdom and these can be corroborated with documentary sources which are available for the entire history of the Kasanje state. The documents show that the orally-preserved lists of Kasanje kings are both accurate and historical, for reasons having to do with political institutions, political history, and perceptions of the past in Kasanje.
