Abstract:Considers some of the domestic routines of Gusii people of twenty-five years ago, especially their routines of dissociation, or what are usually called 'kinship avoidances' and 'division of labour'. 'Kinship avoidance' (a code of mutual constraint or 'shame' (nsoni) in the kinship relation of parent and child) as well as 'division of labour' are both two codes of etiquette representing two essential and complementary contributions to the patriarchal image. The article analyses the uses of the patriarchal image in the political as well as the domestic sphere. Notes.
