Abstract: | Mr Archie Shandling, the outgoing chairman of the Cape Jewish Board of Deputies, said he believed that all Jews will have left South Africa by the turn of the century. While denying that he had any alarmist intentions, Mr Shandling felt that the recent surge of right wing extremism had forced him to speak out. Mr. Shandling said that should the political situation in South Africa become problematic in the future, the extremist elements will look for a scapegoat for their difficulties. And that scapegoat will be the local Jewish community. Dr Adelberg analyses the Jewish-Afrikaner relationship during the Afrikaner Nationalist government era and examines the way in which the changing Israeli-South Africa connection has also influenced Afrikaner perceptions of the South African Jewish community.
