Abstract:This paper is devoted to a comparison of the single-party state with Western-style multi-party systems and with military dictatorships. Focus is on stability, economic development, and nation-building in the evaluation of oneparty states in Africa. An attempt is made to answer the question: Does a single-party state succeed or fail in its performance because of its single-party structure? The main argument is that all statements about the failure of the single-party state in Africa are ill-founded and premature. In the African context single-party states have their shortcomings, but they are the only viable alternative to multiparty anarchy or government by brute military force. Ref.
