Abstract:While Nkrumah strove to be Africa's Lenin, he also sought to become Ghana's Czar. The article examines his ultimate links with Lenin (cult of organization, the economic interpretation of imperialism, his early ideas on PanAfricanism) and in what sense he sought to be a Czar (the royalist tendencies of his secular radicalism). The Nkrumah cult in Ghana first served a useful purpose, then helped to weaken the efficience of the CPP, and then aggravated the tendence towards intolerant authoritarianism.
