Abstract: | Factors beyond the purview of scholars, many of whom have never been to Africa, determined Britsh colonial expansion in Yorubaland: missionary propaganda - the encouragement given to the Britsh by local chiefs under the illusion that the British would be willing tools for the chiefs' political advantages - the desire of the British officer to display the British bunting. To illustrate these factors a detailed examination of how the British intruded into, and ultimately acquired Oyo, is made. Notes. |
