Abstract: | The author places the problems of African education development in the context of a dependent economy still controlled by neo-colonialist forces. Questioning of educational policies in African member states resulted in a reformulation of these policies into four main categories: those related to the democratisation of education; those related to education as one of the tools for economic transformation; those related to education as one of the most important means of acculturalisation; those related to the need for constant research, training and upgrading of personnel as the foundation for renewal and progress. The author discusses these issues and finally considers policies related to fostering greater cooperation with international and regional bodies and with brother nations sharing the sameproblems.
