Abstract:In Sept. 1952 the military regime abolished the 'family' waqf system; during the following year all private administrators of 'charitable' waqfs were ordered to deliver these properties to the waqf ministry which was given legal authority to dispose of their income. The Waqf problem was closely interlocked with the agrarian problem and controversy over it, which has been going on for over 30 years, was one of the major aspects of the ideological struggle between the reformist 'modernists' and the orthodox conservatives. The drastic reforms carried out in 1952/53 must, therefore, have essential significance for both the argrarian policy and the religious ideology of the new regime. This study deals mainly with the first aspect.
