Abstract: | Data for this paper were collected in the Kheiran area, Northern Kordofan Province, which is threatened by a serious environmental crisis. A description of the main features of activities leading to desert encroachment in the region is followed by their analysis with reference to the factors by stimulating the population to adopt strategies that in a long term ecological perspective are counter-productive. Also discussed are processes of social differentiation emerging as a consequence of different strategies adopted by units in the different opportunity situations of an expanding market economy.
