Abstract: | This paper argues that current urban planning approaches in developing nations that neglect or bypass the traditional quarters are inimical to the basib economic and social development goals and mission of cities with 'tradition-oriented' and 'modern' sectors. Planning of such cities should be integrative. Their new structures should allow for the interpenetration and fusion of both traditional and modern elements and activities in a unified system. This should be an explicit planning goal for cities in Third World nations, where socioeconomic transformation and national integration are still high-priority goals. Sections: Introductory - The internal structure of an African city: Ibadan - Implications of structural duality - Implications for the future of old quarters - Implications for regional transformation - Implications for planning approaches - Conclusions.
