Abstract:Occupational aspirations were investigated in a sample of 750 urban and rural primary seven pupils who were randomly selected from all over Uganda. Pupils were asked two questions about their aspirations for jobs. The questions on ideals asked the pupils what job they would most like to do in life and the more realistic questions asked what kind of job they would in fact get when they left school. The results indicated ideal preference for professional and semi-professional jobs for the urban pupils and skilled jobs for the rural pupils. Regarding what pupils expected to do after completing their primary education, it was found that both urban boys and girls hoped for skilled jobs respectively. The findings further suggest that occupational aspirations are influenced by academic attainment. Ref., tab.
