Abstract: | The author gives an historical account of the origins and development of the trade union movement in Rhodesia. Although trade union development in South Africa had an effect on that in Rhodesia the genesis of Rhodesian trade union development shows specific features due to local Rhodesian circumstances, different from those in South Africa. Attention is paid to several strikes that occurred during the period considered in this article, to influences from outside, e.g. the First World War, and those deriving from the particular racial situation in Rhodesia.
