Abstract: | The mineworkers in the copper-mining industry serve as a special force in Zambia's economy and are therefore indispensable. It is due to this reason that they have been continuously pressing for higher wages. In the colonial days, their role had been both economic and political. This article discusses briefly the historical development of Zambia's labour movement, from 1935, when the first strike by African mineworkers took place, till 1964, the year of independence.
