Abstract: | The Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union originated in 1919 as a trade union for black dock workers. During the mid-1920s, branches mushroomed in South African country towns; Africans in the reserves and on farms flocked to join. This article describes the ICU-branch in Greytown (Umvoti district, Natal Midlands) and shows how the ICU was able to achieve mass support in Umvoti: by meshing nationalist (Zulu) aspirations with the class concerns of rural blacks undergoing proletarianisation.
