Abstract: | The literature on the labour movements of developing countries abounds with generalisations asserting the organisational and structural weakness of these movements. This state of affairs was attributed by the writers to the lack of commitment of the labour force to wage employment, illiteracy, and the novelty of trade unionism in most of the developing countries. Nevertheless, an increasing number of trade unions in Africa can no longer be indiscriminately described as weak and ineffective. At least one African Trade Union, the Sudan Railways Workers' Union, is showing signs of organisational maturity and managerial effectiveness. This paper presents a description of the organisation and government of the SRWU as an example of this new brand of trade unions. Notes, tables. |
