Abstract: | In a sample of 1260 Nyanja ideophones, 745 are related, and 515 are unrelated to verbs. Of those related it can be shown that the final vowel is almost invariably the initial element of a racial extension. In the case of disyllabic verb stems it is suggested that they result from the combination of a monosyllabic ideophone and a radical extension. Bibl. |
