Abstract:Discussion of the socio-political, psychological and pedagogical factors affecting a proposed change in one aspect of Tanzania's language policy / the choice of the medium of secondary education, from English to Swahili. Such a choice must be evaluated in terms of the national goals of socialism and self-reliance. It is argued that the proposed change of medium is not only feasible, but likely to have a beneficial effect on the relevance and efficiency of secondary education and the development of desirable socio-political attitudes to the use of knowledge. The greatest obstacle lies in the provision of teaching materials. Refs., appendices, French abstract.
