Abstract: | Kamuzu Banda is an ardent nationalist leader who, more than anybody else, has contributed to Malawi's independence, but who does not take a back seat to any leader with regard to the black man's quest for freedom. Since Independence however he has distinquished himself from the majority of Africa leaders by his pragmatic approach to internal and external issues. He achieved mass public support through intensive personal organisation and communication. His conservative economic policies in general, together with realistic and practical development priorities overcame the hurdle of the lack of mineral recourses. On a continent where most leaders are still searching for direction after nearly two decades of independence, Banda is one of the small minority who has achieved concrete results in the quest for political stability and material progress for his people.
