Abstract: | Shortly after the Nigeria Civil War (July 1967-January 1970) the government of the East Central State passed a Public Education Edict (Edict no. 2 of 1971) that evoked a great deal of interest throughout the State and beyond. In some quarters the edict was hailed as revolutionary in the history of school administration in Nigeria as a whole. But there were others who criticised the timing of the edict on the grounds that the implementation should have been postponed until the overseas headquarters of the Christian missions had helped in the reconstruction of the war-damaged school buildings. By far the most canvassed interpretation of the edict was that it was anti-catholic church in intention. In this analysis of the background to the recent development in church-state relations attention was mainly focused on catholic opposition to government policies on education. It is that opposition that largely determined church-state relations in the region. The existing strained church-state relations in the East Central State are not a post-war development, but had their origins far into the past. Notes. |
