| Abstract: | In Africa, the diversity of languages is no more of a threat to national unity than the multiplicity of religious beliefs and of tribal entities. That is why the OAU believes that it can promote both unity and multilingualism. This article first presents a list of the relevant articles (aims and objectives) of the 1986 OAU Resolution, called the 'Language Plan of Action for Africa'. However, the Language Plan remains silent on how to implement its objectives. Therefore the present author, who was one of the contributors to the Language Plan, goes more deeply into strategies for successful implementation. He proposes the introduction of African languages in schools as medium of instruction and the promotion of inter-African languages, which have already crossed the borders of their respective countries, in universities and other institutions of higher learning. The present language policy in African countries (except for South Africa, which has a language policy very similar to the one proposed by the OAU Language Plan of Action) has failed and constitutes a roadblock to accessible education for all.
