Abstract: | Two main problems beset Black Education, firstly, the high drop-out rate within the first three or four years of primary school, and secondly, the tendency to rely on rote learning. The solution should be sought at a deeper level. Statements made by African leaders such as President Julius Nyerere and President Lucas Mangope, and Black educationalists such as Professor Kgware and Professor Bengu, point to a more fundamental problem which revolves on the suitability of the present Western-oriented form of Black education for the Black pupil. It is not surprising that many Black pupils founder in the Western-oriented teaching-learning situation. A greater awareness and appreciation of the Black pupil's group-oriented upbringing is necessary and guidelines are given along which the teaching-learning situation in Black schools may be brought more into line with the traditional educational style of the Black man.
