Abstract:In pre-islamic times the Arab attitudes towards black Africans were not unfavourable. The author discusses the factors which contributed to the growth of Arab prejudice against blacks at the time of Islamic conquest. Although black Africans managed to make a significant contribution to medieval Islamic civilization, especially to Arabic literature, their role in political and public life was minimal. It was mainly as slaves that they rendered service to Islam, until the nineteenth century.
