Abstract: | The treatment of slaves was determined by the class to which the master belonged. This article describes three categories of treatment: the daily life and work, conditions of life and chances for manumission and shows that the attitudes and behaviour patterns that shaped the institution of slavery were the products of the historical, economic and social circumstances in which the slave owning class existed.
