| Abstract: | Using life histories of Western Nigerians who moved from farming to non-agricultural employment, the author illustrates people's strategies of occupational mobility and accumulation and explores the interaction between individuals' strategies and the conditions of production and accumulation in the regional economy. She shows how accumulation and occupational mobility have effected and been influenced by the importance of descent as both an idiom and an instrument of Yoruba social interaction. Notes, ref., tab. |
