Abstract: | The Susu are a Muslim people, about one million in number, living in Sierra Leone and southern Guinea. The author conducted fieldwork among the Susu in Kukuna, a town in Kambia District, from 1980 to 1981, and investigated the whole nature of their religious system and its relationship to the rest of Susu social life. In the present paper he contrasts categories of religious practitioners who belong to different aspects of the Susu Islamic tradition, and who represent examples of what might be called 'orthodox' Islam and 'folk' Islam. |
