Abstract: | Five elements can be distinguished in the Swazi political scene: (1) the Swazi nation, headed by the Paramount Chief or Ngwenyama and the Swazi national Council; (2) the European Advisory Council, representing the white settlers; (3) the emergent Swazi political parties; (4) the South African Government; and (5) the British Government. The presence of all these elements, and their interaction and combination on various levels, taken in the context of contemporary African political development, makes for one of the most complex unsolved problems on the continent.
