Abstract: | The Ngwa live in Imo State, in the southern part of Nigeria. Mgbede is one of the aspects of Ngwa culture which survived well into the colonial period. It involved the confinement or seclusion of a virgin girl, newly married, betrothed or even unbetrothed, in a hut (a fattening room), where, she received special body care, which enhanced her beaut, and some instruction wnich prepared her for married life. The author defines mgbede culture, mentioning its possible association with the cult of the goddess of fertility, and goes on to describe the origin and scope of megbede culture, the seclusion experierice, and the mgbede outing ceremony. Reflections on the pros and cons of a revival of mgbede culture conclude the article. - Notes. |
