Abstract:Although weeds are one of the major limiting factors to crop production in Botswana, little published information is available to describe the most serious types or the methods of their control. In 1975 a survey was established to discover who Botswana farmers traditionally dealt with weeds, and in conjunction with an implement evaluation project, new farming systems were tested to see if weeds could be controlled more effectively. Aggressive weeds of Rhodesia have been described by Thomas (1970) and Budd (1976). The most troublesome weeds of Botswana have not previously been reviewed and it was therefore decided to prepare a list of the important species. As Botswana has its own specific weed problem, it is the purpose of this paper to outline and to discuss new and traditional methods of weed control.
