Abstract: | The author examines attempts at improving yields of rice, the staple food in Sierra Leone, by the introduction of swamp with water control. Also he considers the attendant social and economic correlates to such a specific process of change among farmers of the Koranko ethnic group. Dealt is with the following questions: 1) What is the innovation? 2) How was it introduced by the Alikalia extension worker? 3) Are there differences between adopters/non adopters and early/later adopters concerning socio-economic characteristics and communicative behaviour? 4) What are the consequences and effects of the innovation for the inhabitants of Alikalia?
