Abstract: | The opinion of policymakers on the issue of poverty has oscillated between the adoption of growth-promoting policies and the adoption of poverty-focused strategies. In the 1990s, the issue of poverty alleviation is back in the international limelight. The present article provides background information on the incidence of poverty in developing countries, including the salient features of the phenomenon in Nigeria. It examines the approach to poverty alleviation in Nigeria and explains the relevance of the 'poverty alleviation with economic growth' strategy and the rationality of investing in people, especially through education. It highlights the policy implications, prospects and challenges of this strategy in contemporary Nigeria. Bibliogr., sum. |
