Abstract: | This paper is concerned with the historical role of Islam in Africa and especially with the issues of the spread of Islam and the movement of Islamic reform. Four statements are made in conclusion, 1) the evaluation of the historical role of Islam is only possible once it has been set in its appropriate historical context, 2) whenever the practice of Islam incited rigidity and supported the power of ruling elites, Islamic thought encouraged the formation of revolutionary movements, 3) struggles for social change are always arduous and rough, 4) imperialism suppressed or distorted the revolutionary movements. Many of them turned into vehicles or puppets of imperialism. Comments and general discussion on p. 77-89. Notes. Includes bibliographies and index. |
