Abstract:A brief survey of records written by people living outside East Africa and those set down by authors living on the caost itself. In the first category the most important works are those of Arab literature, designed to inform and divert the reader with tales of travels, faraway lands, and strange customs. The second group consists of documents written on the coast or islands in Arabic, or in Swahili in Arabic script. Most are chronicles of individual towns or city-states, and profess to give an account of events, and in particular the succession of rulers, over some, in certain cases many, centuries. Controls must be applied to them used in case of oral traditions. Notes.
