Abstract:The original text of the Charter is followed by a translation. The Gebzenna Charter vas written in June, 1894 and was sent by Abunä Matéwos (1842-1926) - one of the four bishops Emperor Yohannes IV brought from Egypt in 1881 - in the form of a letter addressed to the head of the church of Däbrä (Berhan Sellassé, Mälakä Berhan Senä Giyorgis and to the whole clergy there. Main purpose of the letter was to inform the Däbrä. Berhan clergy about the Imperial decree by which gebzenna land was distributed to notable personalities in Menilek's court. Fifteen; churches, all of which belong to the däbr category, were also the beneficiaries of this charter.
