Abstract: | On September 27, 1962, the National Assembly gave the Government powers to detain without trial any person who threatened, or appeared likely to threaten 'the continued security and stability of the State'. Nevertheless there is opposition to Nyerere's T.A.N.U., and. there are signs that it is growing, amongst others from the side of Tumbo and Chief Masanga (F.D.P,). Prime Minister Kawawa defended the Preventive Detention Bill as being in the interest of democracy. Dr. Nyerere, on a press conference, reassured public opinion on this matter. Not so assuring was Roland Mwanjisi's 'Uhuru', the T.A.N.U.'s Swahililanguage newspaper. It would seem that 'Uhuru' is preparing the ground for a further step along the Ghanaian road-press censorship. |
