Abstract:The extended family in Mali and Guinea is breaking down under the twin impact of economic change and social pressure. Legislation is also tending to reform marriage, strengthen monogamy and eliminate dowry. Though it is still difficult for women to enter fully into productive employment, the need for female labour in the development process is strategic and must be met by appropriate measures, as has been done with good results in the Soviet Union.
