Abstract: | The purpose of this paper is to identify the patterns of social differentiation operating in the major urban centers of a country with a low scalar position but a high scalar slope, like Cameroun. The authors discuss 5 determinants of social differentiation: social rank, life style, ethnic status, migrant status, overurbanization, and social disorganization, and give a survey of the results obtained in Douala and Yaoundé. Main conclusion is that while the ecological structure of Douala reflects intricate interrelations between economic and ethnic factors, the lower complexity of Yaoundé as well as the similarity of its ecological profile with that observed in the cities of highly industrialized nations, result primarily from the role played by Europeans in the development of the capital city.
