Abstract:The consistency in findings, of studies of the prestige ratings of occupations, as between different nations, as between different short-term periods in the same nations' history, and as between different categories of persons in the same nation, has led to a not unexpected emphasis on such variations and inconsistencies as may have been detected in the material in the belief that the differences in ratings may tell us more about the nature of occupational prestige than the consensus. The theoretical point raised in this study is the relationship between the general prestige scheme in terms of which occupations are rated and the evaluative component in occupations. The procedure essentially is to determine what occupations are rated inconsistently by respondents in different positions in a single occupational structure. The respondents were miners in Zambia.
