Abstract:The action-patterns of old women in Zulu culture with regard to child-nurture are described, and it is demonstrated how such old women not only administer child medicines and are actively involved in promoting child health but are also in charge of cultural acquisition by the young. The old woman is involved in every aspect of the development of the young, particularly her own grandchildren, and acts as a lactating fostermother should the infant's mother be unable to breastfeed. Ref., sum. in Afrikaans.
