Abstract:By introducing sex education to pupils, the government of Zimbabwe assumed that schools were well placed to teach this sensitive subject. The present study examined the attitudes of teachers and pupils to sex education in schools, and investigated whether the present approaches to sex education in schools are effective. The research involved 24 teachers and 92 pupils at Houghton Park primary school in Harare. The findings indicated that the majority of teachers were not comfortable when giving lessons on sex education and felt that schools should be provided with staff specifically trained to teach this subject. By contrast, pupils did not mind their teachers giving sex education lessons. For them, gender was the major factor. The pupils wanted boys and girls to be taught separately, while the teachers preferred to teach mixed classes. While interest in the subject decreased with pupil's age or grade level, the proportion of boys liking the subject remained relatively unchanged while the proportion of girls notably decreased. The study also found that pupils believe that their parents have positive attitudes towards sex education. App., bibliogr., sum.
